Woman dies in canoe accident

Photo by Greg Reedy – STAT MedEvac landed Saturday afternoon at the Ridgway Firemen's Carnival Grounds off North Broad Street when responding to a canoe accident along Portland Mills Road on the Clarion River.

A woman drowned and a man was injured Saturday afternoon while canoeing on the Clarion River near Portland Mills Road in Ridgway Township.
The woman, whose name has not yet been released, became trapped underwater after canoers reportedly got hung up on a pylon on Portland Mills Bridge.
The man was trapped with his head above water and was later reportedly flown to UPMC Altoona for treatment of a leg injury.
At least one person in the group of canoers was charged with public drunkenness, according to reports from PSP Ridgway.
The water level was still fairly high due to recent flooding in Ridgway.
