Wilfred E. "Buck" Eckert Sr., 95, of 351 N. St. Marys St., St. Marys, and formerly of the Ridgway-Johnsonburg Road in Johnsonburg,
died peacefully on Tuesday evening, January 31, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Jan. 10, 1917 in St. Marys, a son of the late Edward and Rose Brechtel Eckert. On Oct. 6, 1962 in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, he married Greta Dorio Eckert, who survives.
Mr. Eckert was a member of the Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, where he served as an usher for many years.Â He served in the U.S. Army during WW11 from 1941-1945.Â He retired from Stackpole Carbon Company after more than 45 years of service and was also a funeral assistant at Ubel Funeral Home for more than 30 years.Â He was a member of the Johnsonburg American Legion and also served on their Burial Detail for many years. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and enjoyed hunting and ï¬shing.Â He also enjoyed gardening and spending time with his beloved dog, Bongo.Â He was a caring and devoted husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his loving wife of 49 years, Greta Dorio Eckert, he is survived by a son, Ed Eckert of Idaho; a daughter, Andrea Dornisch of St. Marys;
six grandchildren, John, Jacob and Caitlyn Eckert, and Brianna, Kendra and Brant Dornisch; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Clarence, Francis, Andrew "Boostie" and Herman "Teddy" Eckert; and two sisters, Agnes Wolfel and Dorothy Pollick.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Wilfred "Buck" Eckert Sr. will be celebrated at the Holy Rosary Church, 606 Penn St., Johnsonburg on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012Â at 10 a.m. with the Rev. David Wilson, pastor, as celebrant. A military service will be conducted at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail. Burial will be in the Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home, 151 N. Michael St., St. Marys on Friday evening from 5-8 p.m.
