WILCOX – The Wilcox American Legion baseball team opened the Elk County American Legion playoffs with a 12-3 win over Fox Township last night at Jones Township Community Park.
"It's a nice way to start a new season," Wilcox coach Jeff Peterson said. "The rest of the pitching staff will have to pick it up a notch moving forward. Fox is a good team with good pitching and good hitting."
The win puts Wilcox ahead 1-0 in the best-of-three semifinal series. Game 2 is scheduled for tonight at 5:30 p.m. at Fox Township.
Wilcox used two big innings to fuel the victory. With the game scoreless, Wilcox scored seven runs to take control of the game. Cameron Grumley walked with one out to start the threat and Zac Luhr reached base on an error. Quinn Luhr was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Frank Kocjancic walked, plating Grumley. Cole Peterson roped a 3-run double down the right field line to clear the bases, scoring Zac Luhr, Quinn Luhr and Kocjancic. Jesse Reynolds then walked and Mitchell Holmberg was hit by a pitch. Peterson scored on a wild pitch and Josh Mitchell lined a triple to right field to score Reynolds and Mitchell Holmberg and make the lead 7-0.
Fox Township added a run in the third inning when Justin Quiggle singled to score a run.
In the fourth, Justin Beimel doubled to score Joe McLaughlin. A sacrifice fly scored Beimel.
In the sixth inning with Wilcox still ahead 7-3, Wilcox had its second big inning of the game with five runs. Mitchell Holmberg led off with a single and Mitchell walked. Joe Holmberg doubled to bring Mitchell Holmberg around to the plate. After a pitching change, Cameron Grumley singled to left field as Josh Mitchell and Joe Holmberg both scored. After a Zac Luhr single, Quinn Luhr grounded into a fielder's choice to allow Grumley to cross the plate. Mitchell Holmberg later walked with the bases loaded to score Quinn Luhr.
Cole Peterson and Zac Luhr each had three hits to lead Wilcox, Luhr reached base four times. Eight different Wilcox players recorded hits.
Coach Peterson said Zac Luhr was swinging the bat well along with mentioning Mitchell Holmberg and Reynolds for strong games on offense.
"Everybody's getting hits, we're keeping it together," coach Peterson said. "It was a team effort all the way around."
