WILCOX – The Wilcox American Legion team continued its strong play this season with a 9-0 victory over Smethport Monday at Jones Township Community Park.
The win moves Wilcox to 10-1 on the season.
Cole Peterson pitched a complete-game shutout for Wilcox with no walks and 10 strikeouts.
"I can't say enough about Cole's pitching performance," Wilcox coach Jeff Peterson said. "He was tough. I think he kept them off balance. They're a tough team. I don't care what the score says, they're tough. They got a nice lineup, they got some good ballplayers in there. They're a dangerous team, I don't care what the score says, we don't take anyone lightly. I'm never comfortable with any kind of lead against who can play ball and they can play ball. They're going to be someone to reckon with in the playoffs and we still got to play them in the regular season yet."
Wilcox had built a 3-0 lead after three innings, then took control with a 5-run fourth. Joe Holmberg led off the inning with a single in between shortstop and third base. Cameron Grumley was hit by a pitch and Wilcox pulled a double steal to put runners on second and third. Zac Luhr then laid down a successful squeeze play with Holmberg sprinting to home. Luhr's bunt got past the charging Smethport defense and he reached on a bunt single. Holmberg scored on the play to put the lead to 4-0.
"He pushed it right past the third baseman and he got a single out of that," coach Peterson said.
Quinn Luhr reached on a Smethport error at shortstop which plated Grumley. Cole Peterson hit a long double to right field to score pinch runner Louie Imbrogno and Quinn Luhr. Jesse Reynolds reached on Smethport's second error of the inning and Mitchell Holmberg hit a sacrifice fly to plate Cole Peterson and put the lead at 8-0.
Joe Holmberg singled again between shortstop and third base to lead off the bottom of the fifth. He stole second and scored as Kyle Sheldon hit a long flyball to right field which was dropped. Joe Holmberg finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. He also swiped three bases as the team had nine stolen bases overall.
Cole Peterson opened the game for Wilcox with a sharp single to right field. Josh Mitchell walked with two outs and Joe Holmberg singled home both Cole Peterson and Mitchell with a single to put Wilcox ahead 2-0 after the first inning.
Reynolds singled with one out in the third inning and then moved to third on a passed ball. Reynolds was already going to steal second and took the extra base on the passed ball. Mitchell Holmberg grounded out to score Reynolds for Wilcox's third run.
Cole Peterson was the other Wilcox player to have multiple hits for the game, he finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Mitchell Holmberg had two RBI as well.
"Hitting-wise, I don't think we hit real great," coach Peterson said. "We had a few hits here and there. A little bit of smallball helped us out again. It keeps you in the game a little bit. Everything worked out well. When the pitching rolls, the team rolls. When we're throwing strikes, we're in the game. When we struggle on the mound, we're going to struggle in the game. Right now, we're doing well. Cole's throwing well, everyone's confident behind him. I think we're doing real well all the way around him."
Zach Smith had two of the three Smethport hits, Brian Zetwick had the other hit for Smethport.
Wilcox is scheduled to play Bradford at Eldred today. The suspended game from Saturday against Fox Township will be resumed on Wednesday at Berwind Park in St. Marys before Wilcox plays the St. Marys Legion at 7:30 p.m. No official time was given as to when the Fox Township game will be picked up.
