Wilcox advances in state Legion tournament

BOYERTOWN – Wednesday's game seemed to mirror Tuesday's through the first few innings. Only this time, Wilcox was the team to score late runs for the victory. Wilcox scratched out runs in the sixth and eighth innings for a 2-0 win over host team Boyertown Wednesday afternoon at Bear Stadium in Boyertown at the Pennsyvlania American Legion Baseball Tournament. For the second straight day, Wilcox played a scoreless game for the first 5 1-2 innings before breaking through. Also like Tuesday, Josh Mitchell was a force with the bat and gave Wilcox a good chance in the sixth with a 1-out double. After a flyout, Ben MacDonald would single home Mitchell for the game's first run. Mitchell would lead off the eighth inning with a double. Joe Holmberg flew out but was able to advance Mitchell to third. MacDonald grounded the ball back to Boyertown starting pitcher Colby Hartman. Hartman bobbled the ball and Mitchell was able to score from third on the groundout. Mitchell finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored. MacDonald had both RBI for Wilcox. Wilcox received a strong pitching performance from starter Quinn Luhr as he was able to work into the ninth inning. Luhr pitched 8-plus innings and allowed four hits. He walked four and struck out two for Wilcox before giving way to Cole Peterson in the ninth. Boyertown was threatening in the ninth inning to take control from Wilcox. Daulton Weeks led off the inning with a walk and Ronnie Mauger singled to push runners to first and second. Peterson took over on the mound for Luhr. Boyertown pulled off a double steal to put two runners in scoring position with no one out. Peterson would shut the door as he struck out Hartman, Tyler Comport and Luke Stong consecutively to push Wilcox to the victory. Hartman threw a complete game in defeat for Boyertown as he allowed six hits and two runs. He walked two and struck out one. Boyertown had limited chances against Luhr and when Boyertown would get runners aboard, baserunning mistakes would derail rallies. Comport led off the fourth with a single but was caught off the base on a lineout by Stong which led to a 1-3 double play. Cory Fox led off the fifth with a single but was caught stealing at second en route to a 1-2-3 inning. Comport led off the seventh inning with a walk but he was caught off the bases on a lineout from Brandon Griesemer and was doubled off on a 4-3 double play. Boyertown went in order in the third, sixth and eighth innings without getting a runner aboard. Jesse Reynolds doubled for Wilcox in the first inning but was stranded after a groundout and flyout. Wilcox threatened in the third as Cameron Grumley legged out an infield single. Mitchell Holmberg was hit by a pitch with two out and Mitchell just missed a home run as his shot to left field came up a few feet short of the fence. Grumley led off the fifth with a walk and reached third after a fielder's choice from Frank Kocjancic and a sacrifice bunt from Peterson but was out on a failed suicide squeeze play which would keep the game scoreless. Wilcox finished with six hits as a team. Mitchell had two while Reynolds, MacDonald, Taylor Feronti and Grumley each had one. Boyertown finished with just four hits as Mauger, Comport, Griesemer and Fox each had one hit apiece for the host squad. Wilcox is scheduled to play Milton (Region 5 champion, West Branch) at 12:30 p.m. this afternoon. Milton lost 11-1 in seven innings to Doylestown in Game 7 of the tournament Wednesday. In the first game Wednesday, Hempfield East eliminated Penn Hills with a 7-3 victory.
