Walter E. Biel

Walter E. Biel, 91, of 3712 Wilcox Rd., Wilcox, died Thursday morning, April 19, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a brief illness.
He was born on Feb. 20, 1921 in Portage, son of the late John E. and Anna Biel Biel. On Dec. 28, 1939, he married Elsie Marie Jordan Austin; she preceded him in death March 11, 1973.
He resided in Wilcox most of his life and attended Wilcox schools. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, Rasselas, and the Wilcox Sportsmen's Club. He was an avid woodsman, hunter and fisherman. He loved vegetable and flower gardening and bowling.
He was employed by Texasgulf Corp. for 26 years, retiring in 1986; he had also worked for Armstrong Forest Co.
He is survived by three children, Bonita "Bonnie," Mrs. Dennis Sorg of Johnsonburg; Nancy, Mrs. Herman Guenther of Portville, N.Y.; and John E. Biel and his wife Cynthia of Johnsonburg; two stepchildren, Frank E. Austin and his wife Ruth of Gerry, N.Y., and Clara, Mrs. Gene Milks of Randolph, N.Y.; his beloved dear friend, Albina DiProspero of Johnsonburg; 30 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Leo Biel of Glen Hazel, Andrew Biel and Francis Biel and his wife Marie, both of Johnsonburg, and Peter Biel and his wife Shirley of Wilcox.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a son, Robert James Biel; a daughter, Patricia E. Biel Nelson; a step-son, William H. Austin; a grandson, Timothy Austin; two brothers, Vincent Biel and Michael Biel; and two sisters in infancy.
Funeral services for Walter E. Biel will be conducted at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg, on Monday, April 23 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jay P. Tennies of the Johnsonburg United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment will be held at Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Ridgway.
Friends will be received at the funeral home Sunday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
