Wagner ousts Hornung for GOP chair

April 24, 2012

There weren't many surprises in Tuesday's Pennsylvania primary election results in Elk County. As of press time, with all 33 precincts reporting, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney captured the Pa. Republican presidential nomination and will face President Barack Obama in the fall. Romney easily outdistanced former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Congressman Ron Paul and former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum to take the nomination.
Voter turnout was low, not unusual in primary elections, with a little over 20 percent of county residents voting. Voter turnout was heavier on the Republican side, and the Elk County Republican Party elected a new chairman, choosing Mark Wagner over incumbent Edward J. Hornung.
Regarding elected officials in our area, State Sen. Joe Scarnati and state Rep. Matt Gabler, both Republicans, ran unopposed in Tuesday's election and could face as-yet-unknown write-in Democratic candidates in the General Election; U.S. Rep. Glenn 'GT' Thompson, also alone on his ballot, will be facing Democratic challenger and university professor Charles Dumas in the fall.
Other results:
The Republican candidate for U.S. Senator who will square off against incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Casey Jr. in the fall is Tom Smith, who handily won the Pa. primary over David Alan Christian, central Pa. attorney Marc A. Scaringi, Steven D. Welch, and former State Rep. Sam Rohrer. Casey easily defeated Joseph John Vodvarka for the nomination.
In the Pa. Attorney General race, Republican David J. Freed ran unopposed and will face Democrat Kathleen G. Kane, who beat out former U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy.
Current state Rep. Eugene DePasquale, D-York, will go up against current state Rep. John Maher, R-Allegheny, for the office of state Auditor General.
Republican Diana Irey Vaughan will oppose Democratic incumbent Robert M. McCord in the race for State Treasurer.
