John A. Assalone, 94, of 616 Stonehedge Meadow, Ridgway, died on Monday, March 15, 2010, at Elk Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born on March 16, 1915, in Tyler, son of the late Fred and Josephine (Sonamonte) Assalone.
On May 8, 1939, he married Eileen K. Phillips, who preceded him in death on March 19, 2000.
He had resided in Ridgway since 1927, was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church, the Ridgway Rotary Club, the Ridgway Chamber of Commerce, a past Ridgway School Board Member, and a past Executive Director of the Elk County Housing Authority. He had been employed by the Ridgway Cut Sole Plant for 20 years as an outside salesman for a building and manufacturing supply company in St. Marys, and had owned and operated the John A. Assalone Insurance and Real Estate Agency for 25 years.
He is survived by two daughters, Carol Jean Nault of Knoxville, Tenn., Linda K. Holtz of Ridgway; three grandchildren, Mark Holtz, Suzanne Whalen, and Michele Jones, two great-grandchildren, Matthew Jones and Caedmon Whalen; two brothers, Michael and Patrick Assalone, both of Miami, Fla.; a sister, Genieve Gardner of Ridgway; two nieces and a nephew.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Assalone, and a sister, Lena Russell.
A Mass of Christian Burial for John Assalone will be celebrated at St. Leo Church on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. with Fr. Brian E. Vossler, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Leo Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Thompson Funeral Home, 136 Center St., Ridgway, on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. A Wake Service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m.
