Greg M. "Fats" Hanes, 61, of 558 Brandy Camp Road, Kersey, died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family on Monday, March 15, 2010, following a battle with cancer.
He was born May 2, 1948, in Pittsburgh, son of Grace Francis Hanes of St. Marys and the late Linus Hanes.
On July 11, 1981, in St. Marys, he married Valerie Gainor Hanes, who survives.
He graduated from St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1966. He worked for Asplundh Tree Service for more than 27 years and he also ran Ole Hickory Tree Service for eight years. He was a past member of the Kersey Eagles and the Dagus Mines Legion. He enjoyed hunting and spending time outdoors. He especially enjoyed canoeing and was a proud member of the Bob Carnes Water Carnival and Extravaganza. He was liked to read and was an avid Steelers fan. Most of all, he was a loving father and husband who enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years; five children, Toby Hanes of St. Marys, Molly Hanes at home, Casey Hanes at home, Stephanie, Mrs. Chris Larabee of, Florida, Jason Hanes and his wife Marguerite of St. Marys; a mother-in-law, Mildred Gainor of Natrona Heights; a brother-in-law, Russ Gainor and his wife Susan of West Leechburg; a sister-in-law, Sandy Jack of Natrona Heights; and by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother-in-law, Milt Jack.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home, 151 North Michael Street, St. Marys, on Thursday, March 18, 2010, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Kersey Veterans Memorial Fund, c/o Ron Quagliani, 289 Toby Road, Kersey, PA 15846. Lynch-Green Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
