Ridgway finished fourth at the PIAA Team Wrestling Championships which concluded Saturday at Giant Center in Hershey.
Ridgway finished 2-1 on Saturday, advancing with a 33-23 over Bedford and a 34-30 win over Schulykill Valley before falling 31-24 to Pen Argyl. “It’s a very positive weekend," Ridgway coach Gary Gerber said. “Losing our first match like that, the kids are really down. They showed a lot of character coming back against quality opponents. We came in here ranked No. 10 in the state, we left No. 4. I think we opened some eyes for District 9, get a little respect for our district. Our Northwest Region is tough.” Sam Skraba opened action at 160 against JD Rabenold of Pen Argyl. Skraba rallied and tied the bout at 3-all with a takedown just 13 seconds from the conclusion. A one-minute overtime session and two 30-second tiebreaker periods solved nothing, bringing the bout to the ultimate tiebreaker period. Rabenold had the choice and chose the top position. The move did not pay off though as Skraba was able to reverse Rabenold just three seconds from the end to take the 5-3 decision over the Green Knight wrestler. Dylan Evans pinned Seth Stahl in 36 seconds for Pen Argyl at 171. Zack Zelcs won by forfeit at 189 for the Elkers, that put Ridgway up by a score of 9-6. Jesse Sheasley won a 5-2 decision over Ryan Barry, who bumped up from 189 to wrestle Sheasley at 215. Joe Chittester pinned Kirby Mutton in just 18 seconds with a cradle. Matthew Williams won a 5-4 decision for Pen Argyl over Corey Bush in a matchup of two state-ranked wrestlers at 103. Trailing 4-3, Bush received his third caution and gave up a point. Bush then received a point as Williams was called for his second stalling violation to make the score 5-4. James Elphick then won a 4-2 decision over Trevor Delhunty of Ridgway in the 112-pound bout. Jamie Welsh followed for the Green Knights with a 5-1 decision over Slade Horner of Ridgway. Kyler Kutzler squared the dual meet at 18-all with a 2-0 decision over Ridgway’s Kyle Caggiano. The only points of the 125-pound bout came at the beginning of the third period when Kutzler reversed Caggiano from the down position. Mike Racciato of Pen Argyl won a 16-5 major decision over Ridgway’s Jeff Slattery. Garet Pisani won by forfeit at 135 for the Elkers to put Ridgway up 24-22 in the team score. Luciano Burriesci won a 3-2 decision over Steve Mitchell in the 140-pound bout. Mitchell scored the first point of the bout off an escape early in the third period. Burriesci took down Mitchell with 14 seconds left to take a 2-1 lead. Mitchell did escape for his second point but before that, he had been called for his second stalling violation to put Burriesci up by one point for the 3-2 decision. Phil Racciato closed out the dual meet with an 8-2 decision over D.J. Skraba. The Elkers advanced to the consolation final with a 34-30 victory over Schuylkill Valley. Noah Horst started things out for the Panthers with a 14-3 major decision over D.J. Skraba. Ryan Maurer then won via technical fall over Stahl, 15-0 in 3:09. Sam Skraba won a pin in 34 seconds in his bout at 171 pounds. Dylan Scheidt won a 7-2 decision over Zelcs at 189. Sheasley answered at 215 with a 7-5 decision over Mitch Moll, who bumped up from 189 to wrestle. Chittester pinned Trevor Crupi in 32 seconds at 285 pounds for the Elkers. Bush also won by pinfall at 103 pounds. Delhunty won by pin at 20 seconds over Ryan Griffiths, a wrestler with a 27-12 record entering action. “Some of these young kids, they change weight classes for us, they go out there, sometimes we put our young kids against some monsters and they fight like crazy,” Gerber said. “The last few matches were all against state-ranked kids. They were in every one of them. I’m so proud of our kids. Our kids gave everything they had.” Nate Giorgio won a 7-3 decision over Horner at 119 and Caggiano answered with a 14-3 major decision over John Korpics at 125. Pisani won a 3-0 decision to seal the match. Ridgway forfeited at 140 and 145 to close the match. Ridgway opened Saturday by defeating Bedford, 38-23. Pisani opened the proceedings with a 10-0 major decision over Doug Weyandt at 140. Tanner Ripple of Bedford then pinned Jake Himes at 145 in a time of 2:04 to put the Bisons up 6-4. Brian Gibbons then scored a 9-1 major decision over Nate Dornisch in the 152-pound bout to give Bedford a 10-4 lead. D.J. Skraba squared the match with a pinfall over Dylan Evans at 4:20 in the 160-pound weight class. Sam Skraba won a pinfall at 171 over Cody Yingling at 3:49 and Zelcs won a 17-2 technical fall in his bout at 189 over Matt Browell. Sheasley won a 3-1 decision over Jacob Krupa at 215 and Chittester pinned Kaleb Crawley in 29 seconds to garner his 100th win. Bush won a 16-0 technical fall in his bout at 103 and Delhunty pulled out a 6-4 decision for the Elkers at 112. Steven Geisler scored a 6-4 decision over Horner of Ridgway at 119. Cory Thomas won a 6-1 decision against Caggiano at 125. Zach Maust took a 3-1 decision over Slattery at 130 and Trey Easter finished the match with a 17-5 major decision over Dakota Dahler. Gerber was pleased with how the team did. “Everyone’s doing their job and that’s what makes the team,” Gerber said. “That’s what is great about the team I have this year is that they put the team first in front of themselves. They have to go out there and do something tough for them but it’s good for the team, they do it.” Ridgway wrestles Redbank Valley on Wednesday.
