PUNXSUTAWNEY ? In an effort to recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Curves of Punxsutawney is selling purple ribbon pins designated to represent the national observance.
According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, each year, an average of 4 million American women experience a serious assault by a partner.
Locally, more than 987 victims sought domestic violence services through Community Action Inc.?s Crossroads Project.
According to Crossroads Director Susan McLaughlin, ?During the period July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006, domestic violence victims were provided with 2,605 nights of emergency shelter and more than 4,303 hours of supportive services in Clearfield and Jefferson Counties.?
People joining forces can raise awareness of this very important issue.
?We want women in the Punxsutawney Area to know we support them not only through fitness, but through life as well,? Curves manager Patsi Zimmerman said.
The purple ribbon pins are being sold through Oct. 31 at Punxsutawney Curves. You do not have to be a Curves member to come in and purchase a pin. A portion of every purchase will benefit area victims of domestic violence served through Community Action Inc.?s Crossroads Project.
Curves strives to help women build their self-esteem and self-image, while domestic abuse concentrates on knocking it down. It is imperative to help raise awareness and help women overcome the effects of abuse.
