The Ridgway Lady Elkers won 40-29 over the Curwensville Lady Tide last night in girls basketball action at Ridgway Area High School.
"I thought the girls played well together as a team," Ridgway coach Glenn Schauer said. "They passed the ball well today, rebounded well. Just an overall good team effort." Ridgway (5-10) started with an 11-0 run to open the game and build a margin over the Lady Tide. "It gave us a nice comfort level and allowed us to get some substitutions in there," Schauer said. "It was big for us." Curwensville did not get on the scoreboard until Katie Wriglesworth's layup with 1:17 left in the first quarter. The Lady Elkers led 13-4 at the end of the first quarter. Kathy Shirey had five points in the first quarter and Olivia Horning had six in the opening frame. Both Shirey and Horning finished with 12 points to lead Ridgway. Schauer said Horning's inside presence was key. "Olivia was big inside," Schauer said. "She went inside, which she says she doesn't like to do, but she does well." Ridgway led 17-6 early in the second quarter until the Lady Tide rattled off six straight points to end the half. Curwensville trailed 17-12 at halftime. Ridgway opened with an 8-2 run to open the third quarter and push the lead to 11 at 25-14. The Lady Elkers were in control from that point, taking a 15-point lead into the fourth quarter and cruising to an 11-point win. "We just told the girls to run the plays, attack the rim and they did that," Schauer said. Bekka Leitzel had seven points for the Lady Elkers as seven players scored points for Ridgway. Tess Bloom had a game-high 21 points for Curwensville. Ridgway hosts DuBois Central Catholic Friday night. It's a game Schauer said is the biggest game of the season for the Lady Elkers. "We have a big game Friday, probably our biggest game of the year," Schauer said. "We need to play like we did today." In junior varsity action, Curwensville won by a score of 23-21.
