Rams finished seventh at Duals Print E-mail
Sunday, 24 January 2010
By Joseph Bell
CLEARFIELD – The Johnsonburg Rams grappled to a seventh-place finish on Saturday at the Clearfield Duals with a 3-2 mark. The Rams lost to Brentsville, Va. (45-28) and Montoursville (50-23) but defeated Valley (46-27), Keystone (58-14) and Reading (36-33).
"That was a real good match (against Reading)," Johnsonburg head wrestling coach Tom Launer said. "It started at 140 pounds and when we came into the 125-pound match, we were losing 33-27.
"Cody Schreiber won a 2-0 decision to make it 33-33. Max Zimmerman won an 11-6 decision to make it 33-33 and then Quinton O'Rourke took a 9-4 decision to win it."
The Rams had three unbeaten wrestlers on the day as Preston Mahoney, O'Rourke and Zimmerman all went 5-0.
However, junior Jesse Wolfe lost his first bout of the season as he lost, 5-3, to Montoursville's Ben Carey.
Wolfe would finish 4-1 on the day along with Zac Wolfe and Michael Paladino.
"They did well and we were pretty happy with 3-2," Launer said. "Montoursville is the defending district champ from their district and they're a very good team.
"We didn't know what to expect from the team from Virginia and they did very well."
Finishing seventh out of 12 teams, Launer said his team ended up fourth in their six-team bracket.
"With the A and B brackets, we ended up fourth in our six-team bracket and at 2-2, we were tied with Brentsville, who also were 2-2, but they beat us so that put them ahead of us," Launer said. "To pull out another close match like that, that's a good thing for the team and everybody was really into that match with a lot of team spirit.
"Everybody is pulling for each other and that's good for the team. We gave up four forfeits in that match and when you give up 24 points, and you're still able to win, you have to be happy with that."
With the Clearfield Duals in the books, Launer said his grapplers now turn their attention to rival Ridgway this Thursday night.
"We had a couple of kids get banged up on Saturday so we're hurting a little bit going into these next couple of weeks," Launer said. "Since we're probably going to forfeit four weight classes, with a team like Ridgway, you give up that many points by forfeits, you don't have much expectations of winning the match.
"Hopefully we can get some good matchups that maybe we'll see making the district tournament, maybe some matchups that will help our kids with seedings, that's basically what we're going to be looking for individually, the kids helping themselves."
