JOHNSONBURG - The Johnsonburg Ramettes lost 56-29 to Clearfield last night in girls basketball action at Johnsonburg Area High School. "They played hard. Clearfield's a good team," Johnsonburg coach Mike Zilkofski said. "They're a triple-A team and for a class-A school like us. They battled hard, it's just a work in progress."
Clearfield led throughout the game. The Lady Bison had a 10-0 lead late in the first quarter before Anna Polaski had Johnsonburg's lone two points of the opening period, scoring with 21 seconds left. Polaski led Johnsonburg (3-9) with 12 points.
"Anna's always a mainstay," Zilkofski said. "She's a senior, she's the leader. She's going to score some points for us."
Clearfield had built the lead to 21-2 midway through the second quarter before the Ramettes' offense got a 5-0 spurt. Kiana Myers hit a basket and Anna Polaski converted a 3-point play. Myers had seven points for Johnsonburg as the Ramettes trailed 27-8 at halftime.
Johnsonburg's offense did find some rhythm in the fourth quarter as the Ramettes scored 16 of its 29 points in the final period.
The Ramettes started two freshmen with the absences of Becca Myers and Justis Myers from the lineup. Zilkofski said the young starting lineup battled hard against the Lady Bison.
"The other girls did step up, we just got to keep working at practice," Zilkofski said. "For being young, we played pretty well against them."
Johnsonburg was 12-of-17 (70 percent) from the free throw line. Polaski was 6-of-7 from the free throw line for the Ramettes. Madison Sopic led Clearfield with 15 points. Amber Byerly had 12 for the Lady Bison and Jayme Ryan had three 3-pointers for her nine points. Sopic had one 3-pointer for Clearfield as the Lady Bison hit a total of four from beyond the arc.
Johnsonburg is at Brockway tonight. In junior varsity action, Clearfield won by a score of 41-22.
