Rams run away in 48-24 win over Coudy Print E-mail
Wednesday, 06 January 2010
By Joseph Bell
JOHNSONBURG – The Rams used four wins by falls and three more via major decisions en route to a 48-24 win last night over the visiting grapplers from Coudersport. As each school had two forfeits apiece, the Rams were able to take seven matches to secure the win.
"We were fairly confident wrestling Coudersport because they have some forfeits and so did we, so it evened out," Johnsonburg head wrestling coach Tom Launer said following the win. "They have some good wrestlers on their team but we felt that we had the edge there.
"We have quite a few kids on the team who are wrestling well and that continued (last night)."
With a 16-6 overall lead, multiple cramps to Preston Mahoney's calves nearly cost him his bout against Coudersport's Caleb Spring in the 152-pound contest.
"Preston (Mahoney), that's twice now that he's had problems with cramps and he cramps up pretty bad, and it happened twice," Launer said. "Had it happened a third time out, you lose the match but he pulled through and got us the bonus points."
After taking injury time in the first period, Mahoney piled on points in the second with an escape, takedown and two additional points as time expired to take a 7-2 advantage. A reversal, two takedowns and back points late in the third period gave Mahoney a 14-6 edge to give the Rams bonus points in the major decision win.
Launer said he also was impressed with Trey DeCecchis, a departing senior who has not wrestled since his freshman year.
"He got two wins for us (last night) and that really helps us," Launer said. "In a couple of weeks here, we'll hopefully have Steve Carnessali back to fill another spot and then Caleb Garvey will be wrestling at 112 pounds."
The Rams received additional bonus points later in the match as Michael Paladino, wrestling at 171 pounds, made quick work of Coudersport's Skyler Blumer, pinning him in just 22 seconds.
Johnsonburg's Jesse Wolfe also continued his aggressive style as he racked up the points in a 13-0 major decision win over Coudersport's Cody Bova to give the Rams a 42-24 lead.
"Jesse Wolfe is a technician who scores a lot of points in a match," Launer said. "He's a point-scorer, no doubt about it.
"As the year goes on, we think we're going to get better and better as we have more kids out there wrestling. That will give us a boost."
