Lady Dutch defeat Lady Crusaders for Tourney Title Print E-mail
Thursday, 31 December 2009

Staff Writer

St. Marys used a big first half to secure their second straight Elk County Holiday Tournament girls basketball title by defeating the Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic by a 56-37 score at the “Dutch Oven.” St. Marys used a huge 40-13 first-half edge to record their seventh victory of the young season.
“I was extremely pleased with the way we played tonight,” said SMA coach Bob Swanson. “We played very well on both sides of the floor tonight. Our defensive pressure, especially in the first half, was the key to the game tonight. Elk Catholic has a very good team and we knew that we had to keep pressure on them defensively. Offensively, Kayla Hoohuli led the way for us but she received plenty of help from the other members of the team. We also received an excellent performance from Amanda Simbeck who led us with 11 rebounds giving her a double-double, and freshmen Adair Gennocro who played well on both ends of the court.
“Hoohuli is our team leader and she is a complete ballplayer as she not only leads the team in scoring but also plays very well on the defensive end of the court also.”
The Lady Dutch put six players in the scoring column in the title game with Hoohuli leading the way with 23 points on five field goals, four treys and a foul shot. She was followed by Simbeck with 13 points on three field goals, a trey and a 4-for-4 night at the line. Gennocro rounded out the double figure scorers for the Lady Dutch with 11 points on four field goals and a trey. Rachel Krieg and Jenna Anderson each checked in with four points and Shelby Zomcik added a point to round out the scoring.
“I guess our game plan wasn’t what it should have been tonight,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner. “We left their role players play a big part in the game, especially in the first half.
“They played a great defensive game against us and we had plenty of trouble with it in the first half. I give our girls credit for not giving up as they came back in the second half and played much better. St. Marys not only played a very strong defensive game against us they also shot the ball very well, especially in the first half.
“Our club is young and we looked like that tonight, but I was very happy with the way the girls played in the second half. Hopefully we will learn from tonight’s game and improve as we have some big league games coming up.”
The Lady Crusaders were led in the scoring department by Emily Detsch with 15 points on five field goals and a 5-for-6 night at the line. Abbi Petrosky was next for the Lady Crusaders with six points on two field goals and a 2-for-3 night at the line. Emily Gregory was next with five points, followed by Jena Struble and Taylor Frank with four each, and Lexie Meholic with three points.
Emily Gregory of the Lady Crusaders opened the scoring in the game with a layup to put the Lady Crusaders ahead 2-0. Two foul shots by Simbeck tied the game, then two by Petrosky gave Elk County Catholic its final lead in the game 4-2. Hoohuli and Simbeck (2) both converted field goals and Zomcik a foul goal to give the Lady Dutch a 9-4 lead. Detsch cut it to 9-5 with a foul goals, but Hoohuli scored to push the lead to six points, 11-5. Detsch and Krieg exchanged buckets as the quarter ended with St. Marys on top 13-7.
Anderson, Hoohuli, Gennocro and Simbeck each hits field goals to start the second quarter giving St. Marys a 22-7 lead. Frank and Struble scored for the Lady Crusaders to cut it to 22-11, then Hoohuli hits two treys, Simbeck one trey and Gennocro a field goal to push the SMA lead to 22 points, 33-11. A Struble bucket was followed by another a bucket by Anderson, and a trey and field goal by Hoohuli to make the score 40-15 at the halfway point.
Elk County Catholic came out strong in the third quarter as they scored three straight buckets, two by Detsch and one by Petrosky. Hoohuli answered with two field goals of her own, 43-19, then Detsch and Frank scored for Elk to cut it to 43-23. Another trey by Hoohuli made it 46-23. Detsch scored the final bucket for the Lady Crusaders in the period, but Gennocro hit a field goal and Simbeck two foul goals for the Lady Dutch to make it 50-25 with eight minutes left to play.
Krieg gave the Lady Dutch a 52-25 lead as the final period started. Detsch hit two foul shots for Elk, followed by a bucket by Gennocro, 54-27. Gregory made a foul goal followed by a 3-point play by Meholic and another Gregory foul goal to make the score 54-32. Following two missed Lady Dutch foul shots, Gregory hits a foul shot and Detsch two more foul shots to make it 54-35.
