The Ridgway Lady Elkers lost 50-37 to Port Allegany in action Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School. The Lady Elkers (2-4) trailed 27-24 at halftime to the Lady Gators. Shanel Halle started the second half with a 2-point basket for Port Allegany to up the advantage to five. Ridgway followed with a 7-0 run to take a 31-29 lead with six minutes left in the third quarter. Kathy Shirey started the run with a 3-pointer, that was followed by two consecutive field goals from Andrea Redmond.
The Lady Gators called a timeout and were able to adjust defensively, stifling the Ridgway offense. Ridgway had six points in the final 13 minutes of the game as Port Allegany gradually pulled away for a 13-point win.
"I think they frustrated us with some of the pressure they put on us," Ridgway coach Glenn Schauer said. "They did a nice job as far as that goes. It something we should have been able to handle but we struggled with it."
Schauer said some missed shots in the second half were frustrating to him.
"Just the pressure, we missed a couple layups which was frustrating to me," Schauer said. "We played a good first quarter. We could have done a better job in the second half, but I don't think we ran our plays well enough. Our plays really did work when we ran them to completion. We missed a lot of shots."
Ridgway led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter, aided by a 7-2 spurt at the end of the opening period from the Lady Elkers.
Port Allegany took the lead in the second quarter on a 2-point field goal from Kaitlyn Kio at 21-20. Ridgway and the Lady Gators exchanged the lead as Nicole Breier hit a 2-point field goal, followed by another field goal from Kio. Olivia Horning recaptured the lead for Ridgway at 24-23 before Amarae Reinard made it 25-24 in favor of the Lady Gators with one minute left before halftime.
"They did a nice job of rebounding," Schauer said. "We had rebounds in the first half, I think they controlled it in the second."
Breier led Ridgway with 12 points, Shirey had 11. Halle led the Lady Gators with 16 points.
Port Allegany was 18-for-31 from the free throw line. Ridgway was 5-for-8.
Schauer said he is emphasizing four full quarters of complete effort as the Lady Elkers face Austin tonight in Austin.
In junior varsity action, Port Allegany won by a 39-23 margin.
