Johnsonburg's boys' basketball faces the task of replacing a talented senior class which helped the Rams post a 21-8 record and an AML championship last season.
Johnsonburg coach Bill Shuey said the team is up for the challenge. "I think it's going OK," Shuey said. "We're still seeing what we got and the kids are working hard."
Johnsonburg will be without its top two scorers from last season, Seth Streich and Ren Yonker. Streich had 397 total points, a 15.3 average in 26 games. Yonker had 362 total points, a 12.9 average in 28 games. Even with the loss of those two strong players, Shuey said the Rams are strong in the experience level.
"There's a good nucleus of seniors that have a lot of experience. They're really supportive of the younger group, too," Shuey said. "I would like to think that our experience level is above average with Aaron's leadership."
Aaron Patrick and Matt Shuey are the two leading scorers who are returning from last season's team. Shuey had 276 total points, a 9.9 points per game average. Patrick had 211 total points, a 7.5 points per game average. Joe Holmberg could also see an increased role in the offense, scoring 92 points per game coming off the bench. Coach Shuey is emphasizing discipline and a controlled play on offense.
"To be disciplined and to be patient on the offensive end, play very good defense and all the things that you want to see a team do," coach Shuey said. "If we do a lot of those things well, we're going to be in a lot of games."
Shuey said the KSAC will be strong and District 9 will be wide-open entering the new season.
"There's a lot of good teams out there, I think the KSAC is going to be strong," coach Shuey said. "The AML, there's quite a few teams that could win the title there. I understand Cameron County has a lot of good athletes."
The varsity team consists of Koty Gorske, Beau Martonik, Aaron Patrick, Matt Shuey, Louie Imbrogno, Joe Holmberg, Seth Weible, Travis Scida, John Beitz and Dan Paladino.
