Solid Waste Authority working on Jay Twp. site.
By Becky Polaski Staff Writer Cleanup of the site of an old dump site in Jay Township got underway Wednesday morning and is scheduled to continue throughout the day today. According to Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner, several area residents have volunteered to assist with the cleanup, though individuals who are interested in helping can still show up at the site. “We’ve had some folks call saying they’re going to volunteer,” Titchner said. “The township is, I think, getting the food and everything donated for it. We were going to pickup that as the CleanWays Chapter. Everything else is paid for through the DEP grant.” The dump is located off of Apple Street Extension in Weedville and there are signs to direct individuals to the cleanup site. “Jay Township is donating all of their equipment and their whole road crew,” Titchner said. The project is primarily focusing on the cleanup of tires from the site. The tires are being hauled to Veolia ES Greentree Landfill and the DEP grant will pay for their recycling, as well as any garbage that needs to be hauled out as well. According to Titchner, Jay Township employees also made a road to allow better access to the site. “The old township dump was on top of a spoil pile basically and went down a pretty steep embankment,” Titchner said. “All those tires that everybody rolled went far, far away. So there are tires like for a quarter of a mile down in the water. It should be lots of fun.” The cleanup began at 9 a.m. and is scheduled to continue until at least 4 p.m. Community service hours are available for individuals assisting with the project. |
