Ridgway volleyball wins against Clearfield Print E-mail

Ridgway volleyball scored a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-8) victory over Clearfield Monday night at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School. Even with a 3-0 win, Ridgway coach Janet Redmond felt the team could have performed even better.
"We were kind of flat tonight," Redmond said. "They played a slow-paced game. We still have to play our game."
Redmond said the team needs to dictate the tempo of the match during each point of each set.
"They just weren't moving," Redmond said. "You have to be able to play your game and they did not do that tonight. We have a tough game tomorrow night and I wanted to work on some things tonight and we did not do that."
Ridgway got off to a strong start and really did not look back. The Lady Elkers held the edge on the scoreboard for most of the evening. It started with a 7-0 lead for Ridgway right out of the gate in the first set. Kathy Shirey had three aces in those first few points while Olivia Horning had one of three kills in the opening set early.
The Lady Elkers built the lead all the way up to 20-6 in the opening set when Clearfield went on a 5-1 spurt to close the margin to 10 at 21-11. Ridgway took the opening set 25-14.
After splitting the first four points in the second set, Ridgway scored six of the next seven to build an 8-3 lead. Clearfield notched a point on a Lady Elker service error and Ridgway promptly scored four straight to build the lead to 12-4.
Clearfield got three of those points back immediately and whittled the lead to 13-10. Ridgway got five straight points, three of those on Emily Hribik kills. The Lady Elkers started to struggle late in the second set and got within two at 21-19, a 9-3 spurt in favor of Clearfield. The teams split the next four points and led 23-21. Ridgway closed out Clearfield and won the set 25-23.
"Our serves weren't there," Redmond said. "There were a couple things I wanted to see happen tonight, different things on offense, but the type of play we were playing, we were flat-footed, we couldn't get it done. I'm not that well-pleased with tonight's performance."
Ridgway was dominant in the third set. The Lady Elkers had a 13-5 lead balloon to a 23-5 after 10 straight service points from Andrea Redmond en route to a 25-8 third set victory to clinch the win in slightly less than an hour total.
Coach Redmond said the serving had too many errors for her liking and she felt fortunate to win 3-0.
"I am disappointed," coach Redmond said. "Our serves were not there tonight. We got to get serves to get points. We had too many errors on our part. Luckily, we were able to get three wins in a row."
