The third annual Trinity United Methodist Church Community Picnic is slated for Sunday, Aug. 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. The annual event is a community-wide picnic that is free to the public. All are encouraged to attend. "This will be the third year," said Gayl Glover of Trinity United Methodist Church. "I think I would could call the previous two successful. We had good weather for both of them. The first one we had in October and it was a hot October day. It turned out well. I think we had it earlier last year, and it was also a nice day. We had a good turnout with the weather." The event will take place on South Broad Street right in front of the church. The church received permission from Ridgway Borough Council to close that section of the street from the Welcome Center extending to the chiropractic office. "We will have some tents and tables and chairs," Glover said. "We use tables from our social hall and folding chairs. And, a bunch of us have tents we bring and set up. In the past, the church has done a pig roast. The church will again be offering pork this year, but with a slight twist. "We are doing pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans and other side dishes and dessert," Glover said. "We will be making [the desserts] and bringing them in." The event stems from a community outreach effort. "We want people from other churches and what not to come to the picnic," Glover said. A second outreach effort will also take off that weekend at the picnic. "God's Closet" will be on hand to help those in need. "It is going to be good, used clothing that will be available," Glover said. "With all the unemployment in Elk County, that is another aspect that is may help the unemployed, too. "God's Closet" will provide clothing to those who need it." The event won't only be just about food and fellowship as there will be fun for all ages. "We've been given permission to use the courthouse lawn," Glover said. "So, we want to have a few kids' games and activities. We'll have face painting. If the weather is good, we will have a balloon toss, sidewalk chalk and crafts. We have a few things lined up to do with the kids." Entertainment won't only come in the form of games as music will also be provided. "We have our praise band that plays at our 8:30 a.m. service playing music," Glover said. "They will be playing on the street during the event." If anyone has any questions about the event, call the church office. |
