The Ridgway American Legion baseball team won its playoff opener 6-2 over Smethport in eight innings last night in Smethport.
The game was tied at 2-all entering the eighth inning. With one out, Ridgway's Mike Miraglia was hit by a pitch. Kevin Kilhoffer then doubled and Jesse Caggiano hit a two-run double to plate both Ridgway runners and put the team in front. Alan Buehler capped the rally with a two-run homer. Miraglia threw a complete game for Ridgway. He allowed just one hit in the sixth inning, a single that sailed just over his glove. Miraglia struck out 14, including three in the eighth inning. "It was probably the best game I've seen him pitch in a while," Ridgway coach Barry Caggiano said. "He had all his pitches working." Sam Skraba was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Miraglia went 1-for-2 with a run scored and Kilhoffer was 1-for-4 with a run scored to go with his RBI double. Jesse Caggiano had a 2-for-4 night with two RBI and Buehler was 2-for-3 with a run scored, in addition to his two-run home run. Ridgway led 2-0 entering the sixth inning until Smethport tied the game with two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. "I figured it would be a close game," coach Caggiano said. "It was a really good win for us." Ridgway outhit Smethport 9-1. Ridgway now travels to take on No. 1 seed and 14-0 Bradford tonight at 5:30 p.m. In the other winner's bracket game, St. Marys will host Fox Township at 7:30 p.m. Fox Township won 13-12 over Kane in a nine-inning game last night. |
