SPRING CREEK TWP. – Spring Creek Township's supervisors awarded two bids last night as officials prepare for road repairs and an anti-skid shipment. The road bid pertains to sections of Swedetown Road, Middletown Road, Shandley Hill Road and Game Commission Road. "It's for roughly three miles of road," said chairman Richard Wittman during the 65-minute meeting. Jefferson Paving out of Brookville took the low bid with $59,856.48. Russell Standard Corporation out of Union City bid $68,253.40 while New Enterprise Stone & Gravel came in at $63,828. "We go to municipal services down in Clearfield, which is PennDOT," Wittman said. "We went over all the roads and everything is measured and written up. "We have a blank bid packet and it gives them what they have to put down, the width of the road, stuff like that. Everybody works off the same standard, it's the same packet, everything's identical." The supervisors also opened bids for anti-skid. "We bid out 350 ton of anti-skid, which is probably about what we went through last year," Wittman said. "We have over 200 ton in the building right now." Bucktail Excavators was awarded the contract with a low bid of $15.67 per ton, delivered. New Enterprise Stone & Gravel came in at $20.85 per ton while Mike Beaver bid $16.93 per ton. Wittman also discussed the possibility of placing signage on private roads throughout the township. "We had a death (in Spring Creek Township) a few weeks ago and nobody knew where to go and, had it not been for (vice chairman Paul 'Ted') Bullers, they might still be out there," Wittman said. "We have information on road signage. Anybody who sends us a self-addressed stamped envelope, I will send them a copy of the price sheet and where to go to get them. "These are about the most reasonable prices that we've found." According to Wittman, the Hazen Volunteer Fire Department also is offering road signage as a fundraiser. "The one I have on my pole was from Brookville's fire department through a fundraiser and these are two-sided signs," Wittman said. "The roads really need to be signed and, as far as I know, we don't have jurisdiction on private land. "We take care of the roads that we maintain, but not private roads." Also to alleviate location issues, Wittman said house numbers 'should be out next to the road.' "Since this is a rural area, the ambulance was driving around looking for the place to go and (Bullers) took them back," Wittman said. "It really has to be done on their own part and it'll help us and save time in an emergency. Anything that we plow, that is the township, we have to sign it. "If there's any missing, we have to replace them and there's a good possibility that some have been stolen. We put new signs on each side of Spring Creek Township, those were $48 so signs can be very expensive." The Spring Creek Township Board of Supervisors are scheduled to meet again Monday, June 13, at 6 p.m. at the Township Building located at 2491 Spring Creek Rd. |
