Ridgway High School held its annual Veterans Day program yesterday morning to remember all veterans.
With the holiday only a few days away, local veterans, police officers, and government officials were present to remember those who served. Lieutenant Matthew Gabler, who will soon the State Representative of  the 75th District beginning in January, gave a speech about the meaning of Veterans Day. Gabler said the importance of Veterans Day is to remember those who served to allow us to be free to achieve whatever we want.
"Veterans date back to the Revolution," Gabler said. "It is great we've made it through 200 years, and veterans make it possible."
Gabler then described a time when he visited Congress Hall in Philadelphia where many, many years ago the first President George Washington handed his executive power to John Adams. Gabler paralleled that moment in history with the upcoming presidency transition. Gabler gave credit to veterans because he said without them this amazing thing would not be possible.
With the decline of positive influences in America, Gabler encouraged the students to accept veterans as something more then servicemen.
"In this day and age our role models are not setting the best examples," said Gabler. "Give this a thought, look at our veterans and use them as a role model. Learn from our veterans."
Gabler emphasized the courage and dedication it takes to enlist along with completing basic training. Gabler added even though he has never been in combat, he explained the things learned in training flows into other areas of life. Gabler relayed this message with the idea to look up to veterans because they are great resources to learn from on how to achieve your dreams. "Never be afraid to dream," Gabler said. "If you have a dream reach for it, and go get it. On your way though thank a veteran."
The crowd was left in awe as the local veterans, police officers, and government officials exited the stage. Ridgway Police Chief Ralph Tettis asked even though Veterans Day has not yet arrived, to remember all of those who have served or currently serve.
