Johnsonburg, Wilcox to benefit from development grants. By Heidi Zemach
Special to The Ridgway Record

Building contractor Howard McClain, of St Marys will replace the Johnsonburg Community Center’s historic portico and the balcony above it.
At its meeting yesterday, the Elk County Commissioners approved a $66,996 bid from Howard McClain. The new entrance will be fashioned in the building’s original square style, whereas currently it is semi-circular. The new portico will help solve leaking and other problems, according to Christine Bressler, the center director.
The commissioners also approved a $6,050 bid from Redmond’s Construction, of Johnsonburg, for a 2008 project to install echo reduction ceiling tiles at the Johnsonburg Senior Center.
The county commissioners approved a number of proposed projects for the Johnsonburg/Jones Township area for the 2009 funding cycle. These projects probably won’t be ready to go out for bid until after the county receives the 2009 Federal Department of Community and Economic Development contract, which is anticipated in the fall of 2009, said Tracy Gerber, the CDBG Coordinator for Elk County.
The commissioners approved $10,800 to lower the kitchen-area ceiling and installing ventilation fans at the Jones Township Senior Center, again probably late next year. The ceiling is currently about 12–feet high, said township clerk and supervisor Laurie Storrar. Another grant request, which was not approved, was to enclose the center director’s office area, which could have also have helped the township save on heating costs, Storrar said.
The Wilcox Public Library was awarded a $14,300 grant to install an handicapped- accessible ramp, platform, and parking spaces on the side of the refurbished Barratt Building, which is the site of the new library.
The Elk County Commissioners, along with Gerber, will take a tour Wednesday morning with Andy Daghir Construction to see all of the work being done on the building. The work on the building is almost complete, Gerber said. The new building will afford the library a great deal more space than it has in its current location, a block away.
The Lamont Community Association was awarded a $13,600 grant to obtain a handicapped accessible restroom for its center. Another $15,217 grant was approved for the Johnsonburg Community Center for a 2009 project to put cushion tiles in the locker room, and install new electric conduits and a ventilation fan in the swimming pool area.
In addition, Ridgway Township was awarded $5,500 for accessible parking spaces, and to put wood chips around handicap-accessible play equipment at Sandy Beach Park.
Bennetts Valley Senior Center, in Jay Township, was awarded $50,000 toward the construction of a new building.
Highland Township Municipal Authority was awarded $80,000 for the purchase and installation of a new grinder at its sewage treatment plant.
