The Kane Wolves used a strong 19-point second quarter en route to a dominating 45-6 win over Ridgway Friday night at Memorial Field in Ridgway.
Kane led 6-0 after the first quarter, but three successive scores gave the Wolves a 25-0 lead entering halftime.
"It was a turning point," Ridgway coach Mark Heindl said. "One of the things we worked on bigtime this week was we can't be on the field on the defensive side of the ball as much as we had. That's one of the things we're going to continue to work on. We got to understand that it's a four-quarter game. Anything can happen at any given time. That's a credit to Kane, they took advantage of the mismatches."
Kane's first touchdown came on the culmination of an 18-play drive as Kenny Kane snuck it up the middle on a 2-yard run with 34 seconds left in the opening quarter. The drive took most of the final six minutes off the clock.
Ridgway's ensuing possession was a three-and-out and the Wolves scored another touchdown on a 56-yard drive. Ross Nicholson scored a 12-yard run to give the Wolves a 12-0 lead with 8:52 left in the half. The Elkers (2-5) punted on their  next possession and Kane picked up an excellent punt return from Tyler Smith to place the Wolves (5-2) at the Ridgway 22-yard line. Shane Todd capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 18-0 with 6:02 left. After a poor Elker punt on their next possession, Kane got the ball at the Ridgway 30. The first play for the Wolves turned out to be another touchdown as Kane threw a 30-yard strike to Andrew Olson, giving the Wolves a 25-0 lead just one minute after the Wolves' last touchdown.
"That's the way things go when you're young," Heindl said. "We had our opportunities but things didn't go our way."
Kane's first drive of the third quarter also resulted in a touchdown as Todd burst down the left sideline for 78 yards as the lead swelled to 31-0 lead.
Later in the quarter a Ridgway turnover resulted in another Kane score. Ridgway quarterback Joe Renaud's pass intended for Ben Jaques was intercepted with a leaping catch by Kane's Arie Paup. Paup then took it 58 yards down the right sideline and Kane took a 37-0 lead.
Ridgway's lone score came in the fourth quarter as Renaud hooked up with Sam Skraba on an 8-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 37-6.
Dylan Eckstrom scored on a 12-yard run with 8:32 left in the game to put the Wolves ahead 45-6.
"In the second half, the kids did a good job with their (Kane's) starters still in there moving the ball," Heindl said. "That's things we got to take entering next week against Elk Catholic."
D.J. Skraba led the Elkers with 47 rushing yards on 10 carries, half of the team's total of 94 for the game. Elliot Pontious had 21 yards on eight carries and Jesse Sheasley had 21 yards on seven carries.
"There's two sophomores that are gamers," Heindl said. "We have a lot of those type of guys coming back. We're focused on this year and the better we can get the more things can start going our way."
Heindl said Skraba is someone who can create a spark on offense.
"D.J.'s the type of kid where even if he doesn't have an opening, he's going to create an opening," Heindl said. "Again, that's a credit to him. He's a tough-nosed kid. He played hard this week."
Ridgway is at Elk County Catholic for a 7 p.m. game next Saturday.
