The opponent doesn't get any easier for the Elkers this week as Ridgway travels to Curwensville for a scheduled 7 p.m. kickoff at Riverside Stadium. The Golden Tide are 4-1, their only loss being a 23-20 defeat in double OT to Cameron County on Sept. 19. The Elkers (2-3) come in on a two-game losing streak after suffering a 34-6 loss to Johnsonburg. Ridgway coach Mark Heindl said the Elkers have had a good week of practice. "It's a good week for them," Heindl said. "We have lots of things to work on, but we're getting there and hopefully be ready for Friday night." Curwensville is led offensively at quarterback by David Kalgren. Kalgren has 828 passing yards with 11 passing touchdowns. Golden Tide receiver Jesse Hoover is tied for second in the District behind Johnsonburg's Craig Carrow in receiving yards with 430 and has six receiving touchdowns. Running back Jed Greslick has 484 rushing yards - good enough for sixth in the District – and three rushing touchdowns. "Their power game is as good as any in the AML," Heindl said. "Especially with Hoover doing double duty. We have to play to our abilities." Heindl said the Elkers need to just come out and play solid defense. "We just need to play defense," Heindl said. "I think the kids were shell-shocked at Johnsonburg. The defense needs to be able to keep us in the game." Offensively, Heindl said the Elkers need to be able to put drives together. "We have to have consistent moving of the ball on offense," Heindl said. "Last week was a wake-up call for the offense." The second half of the Johnsonburg game saw the Elker rushing attack go into more of a speed mode as D.J. Skraba received more carries. "We have to be multi-dimensional and use our speed as well," Heindl said. Overall, Heindl said the Elkers are looking forward to the challenge of facing a team Ridgway has struggled with in recent seasons. Curwensville has beaten Ridgway five straight times. Ridgway's last win against the Golden Tide was a 37-36 victory on Oct. 10, 2003. Heindl said a key for the Elkers will be execute in all three phases of the game, offense, defense and special teams. |
