The Smethport boys' soccer team used a strong second half to defeat Johnsonburg 6-1 in action Wednesday night at Memorial Field in Johnsonburg.

Smethport and Johnsonburg played an even half for most of the 30 minutes with neither team getting a ton of shots. Smethport outshot Johnsonburg 10-4 in the first half and broke the scoreless tie with 6:17 left in the first half. Derek Nelson scored on a direct free kick just outside the penalty area to put the Hubbers ahead.
Smethport led 1-0 entering halftime.
"We played a good half, and I'm happy with the way everybody played," Johnsonburg coach Lance Rezmerski said.
Smethport broke the game open in the second half. The Hubbers got a free kick and on the rebound of the kick, Levi Lewis dribbled the ball in for a goal.
Nelson tallied his second goal in the 13th minute of the second half on a left-footed shot. Brandon Lund gave the Hubbers a 4-0 lead in the 25th minute of the half, capitalizing on a rebound.
Louie Imbrogno narrowed the lead on a penalty kick goal with 9:46 left in the game.
Todd Willis of Smethport scored on a penalty kick with 2:44 left to make the score 5-1. Smethport added another goal 37 seconds later to close out the scoring.
"The final score really didn't show what the game was like," Rezmerski said. "A couple quick goals in the second half really opened the flood gates for them. You could see the intensity drop for us."
Rezmerski said Smethport is a solid team which could do well in the playoffs.
"We're a young team and Smethport will make some noise in the playoffs," Rezmerski said. "We can take that first half back with us in the future."
Johnsonburg is at Kane for a 10 a.m. kickoff on Saturday.
