WILCOX – When the Winery at Wilcox, located along Mafferts Run Road, opened in the summer of 1994, it was the smallest of Pennsylvania's 40 wineries, according to the establishment's Web site. Currently, the Winery at Wilcox has climbed near the top of the Pennsylvania wine industry ladder, ranking among the top five largest wineries in the commonwealth. Jaime Williams, the son of owners Mike and Carol, and Vice President, said state wineries have shown vast improvement. "Lots of people are producing more improved wines and I hate to call it 'competition,' but it pushes us to improve our product," Williams said. "We really put a fair amount of gallons through the state store system and one good thing that we've seen is that, throughout the state of Pennsylvania, wine quality has improved." The Winery at Wilcox, which now has a capacity of nearly 60,000 gallons, currently offers over 28 selections for the 2006-2007 vintage, according to their Web site. "We've always taken a level of care with everything, from the lowest of our line with our most inexpensive wines, and all the way up to our premium wines," Williams said. "We offer varieties and we try to cater to the 'every person' and people in this area have to appreciate that." With a selection of fruit wines, Williams said the Winery at Wilcox constantly strives to produce better wines than other wineries. "We must be doing something right," Williams said. "The outlets in DuBois and State College certainly help." Williams said the winery also attempts to attend several festivals. "We have a great local clientele and I don't know what sets us apart, but I'm glad it does," Williams said. While Williams said it proves difficult to judge which state winery ranks as best, he said the Winery at Wilcox is in the upper echelon in regards to production. "Production-wise, we're in there, and we've probably been up there for the past four years or so," Williams said. |
