Kelly Devilling is doing something she always wanted to do.
Devilling is entering the U.S. Army in the fall.
She's currently working in the Erie area until then. She said now is right time to enter the Army for her.
"It's just something I wanted to do for a long time," Devilling said. "I just thought it was time to try it. It just seems like an adventure and I'm really excited about it."
DeVilling is excited to be doing some traveling and notes she will probably end up in Iraq.
"I'm ready to branch out," Devilling said.
Devilling is the daughter of Bob and Lois Devilling. She also has a brother, Dan.
"My parents were leery about joining and heading into the forces," she said. "I put the idea aside and I went back to graduate school."
She put the idea aside for a long time. Devilling is a 1999 graduate of Ridgway High School and went to college at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She received degrees in foreign languages such as Spanish and German.
During that time, she thought about the Army.
"Almost every day I think about it," she said. "It could lead to a bigger job possibility, especially being with my age for officer school."
After college, her degrees and job prospects were not panning out.
"The Army was always in the back of my mind," Devilling said.
Devilling then said there was a realization that now was the time to go for it.
"I dropped out of (graduate) school and I didn't have a job," Devilling said. "One day I decided I was tired of being in debt and tired of being poor."
Now with this opportunity in front of DeVilling, she said she is excited for the chance.
"I want to take charge of my life and be respected," Devilling said. "I have one shot at life. I have to take a hold of it."
