By Joseph Bell DuBOIS – Johnsonburg's boys' tennis team was well-represented in the District IX Boys' Class AA doubles championship tournament yesterday afternoon at DuBois Area High School. Both teams, the Rams' No. 1 doubles team, comprised of Dan Logue and Calvin McAlee, and the Rams' No. 2 doubles team, composed of Don Breakey and Travis Scida, advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament. Breakey and Scida defeated Rocky Grove's duo of Kennemuth and McCutcheon 6-1 and 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals. Logue and McAlee previously received a bye into the quarterfinal round, where they defeated DuBois Central Catholic's Braun and Gangewere 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the semifinal round. On the other end of the bracket, Breakey and Scida earned a 7-6, 6-3 win over Elk County Catholic's Parana and Snelick to cruise to the semifinals. Logue and McAlee were able to overcome St. Marys' Hodson and Nesbitt 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the championship match. However, Breakey and Scida were stopped 6-3, 6-2 by DuBois Central Catholic's Begley and Rehremann, preventing an all-Johnsonburg championship match. After jumping to a 1-set lead, Begley and Rehremann came back to win straight sets and grab the title. Begley/Rehremann bagged the championship with a 1-6, 6-1 and 6-4 performance. Despite their runner-up finish, Johnsonburg tennis coach Pam Logue said she is proud of her doubles teams. "Don (Breakey) and Travis (Scida) made the
semifinals also as our second doubles team and that says a lot," Coach Logue said. "The tournament started out with 12 doubles teams and when we got down to the last four teams, two were from Johnsonburg." Coach Logue said Johnsonburg's tennis program faced the same situation in the District IX Boys' Class AA singles championship tournament as well. "And with a runner-up finish at the team tournament, there is a good season," coach Logue said. "It's a proud moment for Johnsonburg, again. My best two players made up the first doubles team and my No. 3 and No. 4 singles guys made up my second doubles team and they were great." After cruising through their first game 6-1 in the championship final, coach Logue said the pressure of a lead can take its toll. "They played beautifully in the first game. But part of any sport is mental toughness and holding a lead, not being anxious, and it's tough to be ahead and hold the lead," coach Logue said. "The other team took advantage and it was their day and they earned the win. In the end, I'm pleased we went this far." |
