By Joseph Bell Record Staff Writer JOHNSONBURG – Facing a 7-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Johnsonburg Rams rattled off six runs to drop visiting Oswayo Valley, 8-7, yesterday afternoon at Knothole Park. With a six-run cushion in the final frame, Oswayo Valley starting pitcher Chris Krajewski surrendered a run-scoring triple to first baseman Dylan Nelson, a three-run homer by third baseman Seth Peterson and a two-out, two-run single to starting pitcher Ren Yonker. Despite the comeback win, Johnsonburg head coach Jeff Peterson said he was not pleased. "I chewed them out for waiting to win it in one inning," Peterson said. "Oswayo Valley was a scrappy team and we took them lightly." For the first six innings, the Rams' bats were stymied by Krajewski. "They have a young pitcher and from what I understand, he used to be their catcher," Peterson said. "We took him lightly and it showed." Krajewski yielded only two runs in the first six innings before imploding and allowing six runs in the seventh. "Seth Peterson's three-run homer really woke us up," Peterson said. "They were a tough team today but if we would wait around against a more quality team, it wouldn't go well for us. We had one great inning but we won't win a lot of games like this if we're playing better teams." Starting pitcher Ren Yonker went 5 2/3
innings and surrendered four runs. Despite nine walks, Yonker recorded 11 strikeouts. Peterson said Yonker pitched a good game. "He pitched himself out of a lot of jams and had a full count with the bases loaded in one inning and was still able to strike the batter out," Peterson said. "He showed a lot of maturity and leadership on the mound today." With the win, Johnsonburg improved to 5-4 on the season. "I'll take the win anyway we can get it and for Oswayo Valley, that was a heck of a way to lose a baseball game," Peterson said. Weather permitting, the Rams are scheduled for an April 26 game against visiting Cameron County at 10 a.m. "I'm optimistic about Saturday because after tonight, I don't know what to expect," Peterson said. "We have Port Allegany on the road Thursday so hopefully we can pull that game out." |
