By Heather Tressler Precision Manufacturing Institute is located in Meedville. It is a business and industry training institute which offers the skills of the manufacturing industry to perspective people. PMI is a private non-profit organization, and nationally accredited. Credits earned at PMI go towards a two year or four year degree. The institute accommodates adult students with a 12 week - nine month program with training on site. Classes average from four to five people with hopes of reaching seven to nine. This year will mark 20 years of training for PMI. PMI will be cutting the grand opening ribbon in Sharon on April 14, 2008. Jerry Knight, PMI Director said, “I have no ambition of really trying to expand.” However, there was a demand for a training facility like PMI in Sharon. Knight said, “there are a lot of careers in manufacturing. At PMI, we have a placement rate of 98.5 percent within a 40 mile radius of where we teach.” “We are really fortunate that a facility like PMI is here,” said Knight. “We encourage industries to drop by with their customers to show them what our facility is all about. It is a huge benefit from an economic standpoint.” “As a Vo-tech graduate, my goal is to take away the perspective of having a career in manufacturing associated with being slow,” said Knight.
“I want to encourage manufacturing and college.” Knight assures that PMI is equipped with the latest technology. “It is really hard to get young people excited without the latest technology,” Knight said. “People who want to get their hands dirty can really do well.” Eric Bridges, Director at North Central has been working closely with Knight to encourage PMI. “We will not allow PMI to fail,” said Bridges. Knight noted that he has never turned away a student because of money. “Everybody’s got a spot in life, we just have to find it,” said Knight. “What we teach is inexpensive. What we give back to the community is what it’s all about. If we don’t teach it, we won’t be competitive in manufacturing.” Another important thing about PMI is they guarantee all of their students to be able to do the job 100 percent. “If they can’t do it, we’ll take them back at our cost,” said Knight. “But, we haven’t had to do that yet.” |
