JOHNSONBURG – With a dominating performance from Gabe Kraus on the mound, St. Marys Major League All-Stars earned a 10-0 4-inning win over Johnsonburg.
Kraus frustrated the opposition in a 5-strikeout, 1-hit effort.
Meanwhile, St. Marys used a 3-run second inning and 5-run fifth to fuel the shutout victory.
St. Marys got a run across in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Heary reached base with a 2-out single to center field and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kraus reached on an error at shortstop which allowed Heary to score from second for the early 1-0 lead.
The top of the second inning began in a promising fashion as Tyler Singer legged out an infield single. A 5-3 groundout moved the runner to second before Kraus got a strikeout for the inning's second out. Looking to push a run across, Trevor Lobaugh slapped a Kraus pitch off the second baseman's glove as the ball rolled into the outfield. Brenden Rolley made the accurate throw to gun down Singer at home for the third out.
St. Marys followed in the home half of the second inning as Nate Beimel reached with a 1-out walk. Ryan Bressler was hit by a pitch to put two runners aboard before Nate Beimel was lifted for pinch runner Logan Hoffman. Austin Sadosky followed with a single to center field but Hoffman was out at home while trying to score.
The 1-0 score wouldn't last for long, however, as Tim Wehler reached on an error at shortstop to score Bressler and Sadosky for a 3-0 advantage. Tim Wehler reached second base on the play and followed it up with a stolen base before scoring on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.
Kraus enjoyed a 1-2-3 top of the third before St. Marys tallied five runs in the home half of the inning. Heary and Kraus both walked, and a passed ball allowed both runners to advance into scoring position.
With no outs, a Hoffman single brought in Heary and Kraus for a 6-0 advantage. Hoffman advanced to second on an error in center field. Johnsonburg opted for a pitching change and put Kody Paul on the hill.
An error at first base allowed Hayden Tettis to reach safely and brought in Hoffman for a 7-0 lead. Nate Beimel followed with a run-scoring double to bring in Tettis for an 8-0 advantage. The blast was the only extra-bases hit of the game. Ryan Newton came in to pinch hit and reached on a clean single to put runners at the corners. Sadosky followed with a deep sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Nate Beimel for a 9-0 lead. Following a fielder's choice from Tim Wehler to second base, he was caught stealing to end the inning.
Kraus was business as usual in the top of the fourth inning as he retired the side, setting up St. Marys for the chance to end the game with one more run in the home half of the inning.
Paul started off by getting Rolley to look at a called third strike but Henry broke through with a sharp single to left field. Kraus reached on an error at second base as Heary advanced to third.
A wild pitch then brought in Heary for the 10-0 win.
Heary was 2 for 2 on the day and scored three times. Hoffman brought home two runners in the game.
Johnsonburg is scheduled to play at Brockway for a 6 p.m. game Thursday night.
