SHARON – Ridgway senior D.J. Skraba reached the 100-win mark at the Northwest Regional Championships last weekend at Sharon High School.
Skraba came into the tournament at 99 wins but lost in the quarterfinals. He then took his 100th win in the first round of consolations with a 4-0 decision over Josh Lewis of Youngsville.
“I would have rather gotten it in the first match, then I came back and won the next two,” Skraba said.
Skraba came into this season with 70 wins and became a 3-time regional qualifier this season. He won his first district title at 160 pounds this season and was a third-place finisher in 2008 at 125 and in 2010 at 152. In 2009, he was injured and unable to compete.
He said the goal of 100 wins was on his mind before the season.
“That was one of my first goals this season that I set,” Skraba said.
Skraba had 25 wins as a freshman, then had 19 as a sophomore. He had 26 wins last year and finished this year with 31.
Ridgway wrestling head coach Gary Gerber appreciates all that Skraba did for the Elkers and is impressed with the accomplishment, especially since Skraba spent a number of duals this season wrestling up a weight class at 171 pounds.
“That’s impressive. I moved D.J. all over the place for the team,” Gerber said. “That makes it tough to get to 100 wins and with our schedule, that’s really tough to do. But he did it and that says a lot about the young man.”
Gerber said he was impressed with Skraba’s consistency.
“[He’s] Mr. Reliable, always there, always able to count on him for the team,” Gerber said. “Whatever I’ve asked of him, he’s done, just a tremendous kid.”
