Shuey wins state title in javelin

Michael Shuey won the PIAA gold medal in javelin with a mark of 200-1.

SHIPPENSBURG – Johnsonburg's Michael Shuey wasn't able to get a gold medal last weekend at the District 9 Track and Field meet.
He made sure to add one on Friday.
Shuey won the PIAA gold medal in the javelin event with a mark of 200-1 during the first day of competition at the PIAA Track and Field Championships held at Shippensburg University.
Shuey bettered last week's mark of 189-8 by more than 11 feet to win the gold medal. D-9 champion Ryan Kerr of Brookville finished third with a mark of 194-8. Tyler Hope of Tamaqua was the runner-up at 198-4. Mitch Obenrader of North Clarion was 11th with a mark of 184-6.
Shuey is also a state qualifier in the high jump which will take place around 12:30 p.m. this afternoon.
Rhianon Fowler qualified for the girls' long jump and finished with a mark of 14-6.
Patrick Anderson of Kane won the state title in the boys pole vault with a mark of 15-11, setting a new PIAA record in the process. The runner-ups finished at 14-6. Teammate Jack Wolfe was 12th at 13-0.
Ashley Wolfe of Brookville was the top D-9 finisher with a 14th place mark of 16-3. Lauren Ball of Bloomsburg won the state title with a jump of 18-1 1/4.
ECC freshman Nicole Florio finished in a tie for fifth in the girls high jump with a mark of 5-2. Corrin Regginello of Hickory won the state title at 5-5.
The St. Marys 4x800 relay team had the top time in the preliminary stage with a mark of 9:35.29.
Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic had the best time in the preliminary round in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:13.48. Adair Gennocro of St. Marys also qualified for the final with a fourth-place finish in her heat and a time of 5:15.
Aisha Newsome of Brookville qualified for the finals in the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.90. Abbi Petrosky of ECC competed and finished with a time of 17.01.
Nick Conway of Port Allegany took second in his heat at 14.87 to make the final in the boys' 110-meter hurdles.
Lanae Newsome of Brookville won her heat in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.47 to make the final. Aisha Newsome of Brookville was second in her heat in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.16.
Kalil Slaughter of Sheffield had the best time in the prelim round with a 10.88 in the boys 100-meter dash.
Action continues Saturday morning at Shippensburg.
