ST. MARYS – It may have been a bit cool on Saturday morning, but the sunny weather still resulted in a good turnout for this year’s Bunny Hop 5K walk/run at Benzinger Park. The second annual event was the result of efforts by Taylor and Carly Frank and Michael, Daniel, and Rachael Paladino to raise money for The Brain Aneurysm Foundation.
“It was definitely better weather [this year] and I think we might have had more people,” said Taylor Frank prior to the 5K run.
Last year’s inaugural event was held in cool and rainy conditions, but still saw a large number of participants. As was the case last year, the 5K walk started at 9 a.m. and the run got under way at 10 a.m. Both followed the same route, beginning and ending on the Vine Road side of Benzinger Park.
According to Frank, 366 people preregistered for this year’s event, but even more showed up.
“I guarantee that there’s at least a hundred people that didn’t register that came today,” said Michael Paladino.
Some of the individuals who took part in the walk also stayed and participated in the run.
Frank and Paladino estimated that at least 200 people participated in the walk.
While the route stayed the same this year, there were a few changes to the event involving registration and those whose memories were being honored.
“We preregistered online this year, which made it a lot simpler for all of us paper-wise. We also added Jane Hnath, her family, to the mix to bring more supporters out and to just get them involved too since they were so affected,” Frank said.
A sign hanging at the pavilion at Benzinger Park for the event listed the names of individuals who have lost their lives to brain aneurysms, as well as those who are survivors. Along with the addition of Hnath, others honored at the event were Becky Frank, SueEllen Paladino, Mag Pauline, Georgianne Proesl, Pat Clyde, Bill Smith, Michael Rigard, John Potts, and Lori Tamburlin.
