Lunch prices at the Ridgway Area School District are expected to increase about 15 to 20 cents per lunch at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year.
Finance Manager Brent Rhoads reported attending conference concerning the inevitable increase during Tuesday night's regular board meeting.
"We are basically going to be forced to increase lunch prices for paid students," Rhoads said. "Eventually they want the paid students to equal what we get for free lunches, but for next year it looks like there will be an increase in the high school, middle school and elementary school."
Rhoads expects the high school lunch to increase to about $1.95 to $2. The elementary school is expected to cost about $1.75 and the middle school must fall within the range of the high school and elementary school lunches to abide by the new nutrition standards.
"We can't feed the same meals to the middle school students as we do the high school students," Rhoads said.
The high school and middle school lunches currently cost each student $1.85. The elementary lunch costs $1.60.
According to the new nutrition standards, the high school, middle school and elementary lunch must each fall within a caloric range. The high school meal must be greater than 750 calories and not exceed 850 calories. The middle school meal must be greater than 600 calories and not exceed 700.
