School district scores high on PSAA's

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area School District exceeded the PSAA exam targeted test results for the 2010-2011 school year.
Each spring the school district is required by the state to give the exams to students in grades 3-8 and 11.
"They score the students 'below basic,' 'proficient' or 'advanced,' and what the state is looking for is proficient or above," said high school principal Brock Benson. "Proficient means students are on grade level in reading and in math, so that's what the targets are based off of. Schools must reach specific proficiency targets in math or reading each year in order to achieve adequate yearly progress [AYP]. This is what all of the schools are trying to achieve."
Benson noted that grade levels must make the targets in math and reading.
"Back when 'no child left behind' was instituted about 10 years ago, they started the bar rather low and then it's going up and up," Benson said. "In 2014, theoretically we should be at 100 percent."
In math, the elementary school school scored 88.6 percent of a targeted 67 percent proficiency.
"As you can see there has been a nice upward trend when we are looking at the math scores for the elementary school starting in 2006," said elementary principal Jennifer Hobbs. "Each year it has continued to increase."
