JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area School District approved an increase in the price of lunch by five cents after a mandate from the federal government during their regular school board meeting Thursday night.
"In December of 2010 there was a federal bill that passed entitled 'Healthy Hunger–Free Kids Act,'" said board secretary Lisa J. Mahoney. "It has a couple of things they hope to be able to provide resources to the schools to help improve the quality and nutritional value of the meals. There is a section in there that requires school districts to ensure that they are providing the same level of support for lunches served to students who are not eligible for free and reduced lunches."
The increase in the price of lunch will only affect full priced lunches. The cost of reduced lunches will remain the same for the 2011-2012 school year.
"Basically what that means is that we had to compare our average price that we charge for lunches to students receiving paid lunches to the difference, to the higher federal reimbursement for free lunches and the lower federal reimbursement for paid lunches," Mahoney said. "What that means is for every free lunch we serve we get $2.72 from the federal government. For every lunch that we serve to a student who pays full price we get 26 cents back, so when you subtract that difference it is $2.46. Our full lunch prices are $1.75 for high school and $1.50 for elementary. The average price of that is $1.63. The goal is to try and get that up to $2.46."
