Ridgway takes 22-stroke win over Kane

September 7, 2011

Alex Oknefski tees off for Ridgway golf Tuesday afternoon. He finished with a score of 51.

With an adjusted lineup Tuesday, the Ridgway Elkers strolled to a 22-stroke victory Tuesday at Laurel Mill Golf Course to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Ridgway senior Jordan Lundin shot a 41 to take medalist honors and teammate sophomore Sam Delhunty was four strokes behind with a 45; Ridgway seniors Eric Matheson, Aaron Sorge and Kyle Caggiano each shot 49 for a team total of 231 shots.
Ridgway senior Alex Oknefski and junior Tony Leithner both shot 51, and junior JoJo Jaques fired a 53 but those three did not factor into the scoring.
“[Tuesday] presented an excellent opportunity for us to play the student-athletes who haven chosen to play both football and golf this fall,” said Ridgway head boys varsity golf coach Dave Zawatski. “They have dedication a lot of time and effort into both sports, and we as a coaching staff want to reward them [Tuesday].
“They played well under tough scoring conditions. For Sam Delhunty to hit a 45 in his first start is very impressive. Alex Oknefski, Tony Leithner and JoJo Jaques also played well except for a hole or two in their first start of the season.”
Kane’s Ryan Greto led the Wolves with a 46. He was complemented by Dan Park with a 49, Koden Thompson and Austin Woolcoch with a pair of 51s, and John Bedford with 56 for a team total of 253 strokes.
Kane’s Brendan Sharer fired a 61 and Austin Hoag rounded out the scoring with a 63 but neither factored into the scoring.
“We wish the boys and the rest of the football team luck this Friday and for the remainder of the season,” Zawatski said. “Coach [Mark] Heindl and his staff have been very cooperative in making this work.”
