Ridgway Major League softball opens play
The Ridgway major league (11-and-12 year old division) softball team opened all-star play Sunday afternoon with a 6-5 loss to Brookville at the Ridgway Little League fields along Grant Road. Ridgway held a 5-4 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning before Brookville would score a pair of runs as the designated home team to take the victory. Alissa Watterson started the inning with a walk. After a strikeout, Brookville starting pitcher Karlie McManigle would hit a short single to first. Watterson moved to third on a bad throw, putting two runners on for Brookville. Watterson would score on a wild pitch and McManigle moved to second and third on a pair of wild pitches. With one out, Hannah Kirkwood then hit a grounder to third. She was out on the 5-3 groundout but Watterson would score the winning run from third on the play to give Brookville the win. Ridgway opened the scoring in the second inning with a pair of runs. Second baseman Erica DeLullo led off the inning with a walk. Catcher Lilly McClain reached on a Brookville error which moved DeLullo to third. Shortstop Cheyenne Geletka walked to load the bases for Ridgway. After a flyout, right fielder Rayne MacDonald singled to score DeLullo and Haley Hoffman walked to bring McClain around for the game's second run. Brookville would tie the game in the third inning as right fielder Kennedy Gilbert led off the inning with a single, she was followed by a walk from center fielder Brooke Hummel. Both runners scored on a double off the bat of second baseman Maley Zents. Madison Gilbert doubled in the fourth inning for Brookville and later scored as Kirkwood reached on a Ridgway error. Ridgway would reclaim the lead in the fifth inning with a 3-run outburst. Center fielder Casey Woodford led off by reaching on a Brookville error. Haley Mahoney then walked and McClain reached on a dropped throw on a fielder's choice to third which loaded the bases for Ridgway. After a forceout to home, first baseman Anna Jaques walked to score Mahoney and tie the game. Karley Labenne then singled home both Geletka and DeLullo as Ridgway led 5-3 after the top of the fifth. Zents singled and later scored on a wild pitch for Brookville's fourth run. Ridgway will next play at Smethport/Mt. Jewett Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in the first round of consolation play. Johnsonburg will host Bradford at the same time Tuesday in the other first-round game. The Ridgway/Smethport winner will play at Brockway on Thursday while the Johnsonburg/Bradford winner will take on Warren on Thursday at a site to be determined. Brookville advances to play at Punxsutawney in the semifinals of the winner's bracket on Tuesday. Punxsutawney won 9-0 over Brockway Sunday afternoon.
