Ridgway baseball competes in Altoona Curve Classic to open season

Ridgway baseball gets ready on the defense in its first game against Bishop Guilfoyle at the Altoona Curve Classic over the weekend in Altoona.

ALTOONA – Ridgway baseball opened its season over the weekend at the Altoona Curve Classic, finishing with an 0-2 record.
The Elkers lost in the opener, 8-2, to Bishop Guilfoyle and followed with an 11-1 loss to Bishop Carroll.
Ridgway scored in the third inning on a single by Alex Dickant and a double by Aaron Sorge. In the fourth inning, Josh Mitchell led off with a triple and later scored on a single by D.J. Skraba. Bishop Guilfoyle was able to use six walks and two batters hit by a pitch to their advantage as they turned the free passes in four runs. Bishop Guilfoyle was the Class A District 6 runner-up last season, making a big run coming from the seventh seed to lose in the finals to Homer-Center.
Bishop Guilfoyle took the lead with a 3-run second inning and added one in the third, three in the fourth and one in the sixth inning. Skraba had a pair of singles for Ridgway.
Mitchell started and tossed three innings. He allowed four runs on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts. He hit two batters. Jesse Reynolds came on in relief and went three innings. He allowed four runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out none.
In the second game against Bishop Carroll. Ridgway lost 11-1 in a five-inning game. Ridgway scored in the fourth inning on a leadoff single by Kevin Kilhoffer and a 2-out triple by Dickant. Bishop Carroll scored seven runs in the fourth inning with two outs. Bishop Carroll was 12-4 last season and was the No. 1 seed in the District 6 playoffs before being upset by Northern Cambria. Kilhoffer went 3 2-3 innings and had three walks and two strikeouts. He allowed six runs on eight hits. Skraba came in and pitched 1 1-3 innings and allowed five runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out none.
"We may not have been able to come home with a win but what we did come home with a great, overall baseball experience," Ridgway coach Mark Morelli said. "The Curve Tournament being played on a professional field surrounded by professional facilities is quite an out of this world venture that our kids really enjoyed.
"Our league record is still 0-0, in the long run we feel we picked up some valuable playing time against two quality opponents at the Curve Tournament which we hope to put that experience to good use playing against the local teams on our schedule," Morelli said.
Ridgway is scheduled to travel and face Johnsonburg at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
