Ridgway’s humble link to a saint

Photo by Joseph Bell – As a philanthropist, radio station enthusiast and minority owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Ridgway resident Denny Heindl’s sports memorabilia collection has grown immensely over the past 45 years. Its crown jewel, however, may be a baseball with the simple inscription “J P II” for Saint John Paul the Great.

It’s one of the more unusual pieces of sports memorabilia in the world. It’s also one of the rarest of all: a baseball signed by a pope.
That’s just one of the many pieces in Ridgway resident Denny Heindl’s vast collection. As a philanthropist, radio station enthusiast and minority owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Heindl’s collection has grown immensely over the past 45 years. Its crown jewel, however, may be a baseball with the simple inscription “J P II” for Saint John Paul the Great, formerly known as Pope John Paul II.
