JOHNSONBURG – A late run of bonus points propelled the Keystone Panthers to a 39-35 dual meet win over Johnsonburg wrestling Thursday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
With four matches left, Johnsonburg had built up a 35-15 lead but the Panthers were able to come back as Keystone earned maximum points in the final four matches to pick up the dual win.
"As a team, I'm disappointed," Johnsonburg coach Mike Votano said. "I thought we could have come up with a victory. A few things went the wrong way that we thought would have went the other way. We gave up some extra bonus points. We didn't collect all the bonus points that we thought we were going to collect. We got to get back to work and prepare for the rest of the season."
At 160 pounds, Evan Slater would take on Matt Reeves of Johnsonburg. Reeves started the match well with an early takedown before giving up a penalty point because of an interlock. With Slater still in the down position, he would reverse Reeves and then score a set of three back points for a 6-2 lead. He added another set of two back points near the end of the first period for an 8-2 lead. The two wrestlers exchanged reversals before Slater earned the pin in 2:34 to make the Johnsonburg lead 35-21. Zach Stiglitz would earn a pin over John Hummel in 1:37 in the 170-pound bout for the Panthers and Zach Beichner would secure a forfeit win at 182 pounds which put the Panthers within two at 35-33.
The dual would be decided in the final bout at 195 pounds as Brandon Chambers of Keystone took on Mitchell Schloder of Johnsonburg. Schloder would open the match well, scoring the first five points for a 5-0 lead on a takedown and three back points. Chambers would answer with a 5-point move of his own on a reversal and three back points to leave the score tied at 5-all after the first period. Schloder had the choice in the second period and chose the neutral position. The two grapplers would battle for the period but neither wrestler would ultimately score any points although Schloder had a couple close takedowns in the second period. Chambers had the choice in the third period and chose the down position. Schloder elected to give up the point and start the third period from the neutral position down 6-5. Chambers was able to take down Schloder and scored the pinfall over Schloder in 5:17 to seal the 39-35 victory.
