January 30, 2012

Johnsonburg's Caleb Garvey works on tying up Sheffield's Collin Maines during a match at 138 pounds held during a tri-meet at the St. Marys Area High School on Saturday morning. Garvey pinned Collin Maines at the 2:50 mark of their match to tie the score at 6-all.

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad picked up a pair of victories over the Johnsonburg Rams and Sheffield Wolverines during a tri-meet at SMAHS on Saturday morning. The Dutch defeated the Rams 72-12 and beat the Wolverines 59-9. Sheffield also picked up a 48-18 victory over Johnsonburg.
"In general, we had real nice team efforts today," said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. "The kids wrestled well and we fed off of each other. We need to use some of our matches as learning experiences, and that is where we've been at for the most part this year is trying to get better every day and we could use today as part of that."
"I thought Billy Gabor wrestled well in his match against Sheffield. He's a young guy we've got. Gary Fledderman won two matches today. He's down at 195 for us. He's our 195/220 pounder. He's been improving, and that's how a lot of our team is. It's really hard to really pick out some individuals today because we have been wrestling as a team, and everybody is picking little things and getting a little bit better," Surra added.
The first match of the day pitted St. Marys against Johnsonburg and opened at 126 pounds, where Johnsonburg's Alex Zimmerman pinned Dylan Smith at the 2:27 mark of their match, giving the Rams a 6-0 lead. The Dutchmen tied things up at 6-all as Brandon Mackie received a forfeit at 132 pounds.
Johnsonburg's Caleb Garvey put the Rams back in front as he pinned Tyler Yetzer at the 5-minute mark of their match after being down 7-2 to give the Rams a 12-6 lead. St. Marys pulled back in front for good though as Sam Miller and Bill Gabor received forfeits at 145 pounds and 152 pounds, respectively, to give the Dutchmen an 18-12 advantage.
At 160 pounds, Dutchmen Josh Cameroni pinned Michael Kennedy at the 3:03 minute mark, and Ken Stage also added six more points for St. Marys after receiving a forfeit at 170 pounds to make the score 30-12. Dutchmen Joe McLaughlin pinned Maison Walters 1:34 into their match at 182 pounds, and Gary Fledderman also picked up a win for the Dutch at 195 pounds after he pinned Dylan DeLong at the 2:58 mark of their match to make St. Marys' lead 42-12.
The rest of the matches ended in forfeits by the Rams. St. Marys' wrestlers Mike Wolfel, Brian Carnahan, Ray Dent, Evan Smith, and Willie McGonnell picked up wins at 220 pounds, 285 pounds, 106 pounds, 113 pounds, and 120 pounds, respectively, making the final score 72-12 in favor of the Dutchmen.

At 126 pounds, Johnsonburg's Alex Zimmerman pinned Adam Barr at the 1:11 mark to make the final score 48-18 in favor of Sheffield.
"Today was a nice day to get some more mat time under our belts. A couple guys got a few more wins under their belts today," said Johnsonburg coach Mike Votano. "Hopefully this will carry into the rest of the season and into districts. "It was nice to wrestle St. Marys, we haven't seen them all year. They have some talent on their team, and it was nice to get some other competition. "
Votano added that wrestling in the tri-meet provided a good opportunity for his squad, and several of Johnsonburg's wrestlers fared well in both of their matches.
"Alex Zimmerman finished the day at 2-0. Caleb Garvey finished the day at 2-0. Michael Kennedy split 1-1 today. All these guys have been working hard, and hopefully this will continue on for the rest of the season," Votano said.
