Rams fall to Sheffield, win four of six matches

January 10, 2012

Alex Zimmerman was victorious in his bout Monday night.

Johnsonburg wrestling lost 39-29 in a dual meet against Sheffield Monday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Johnsonburg won four of the six matches wrestled on the mat against the Wolverines. Johnsonburg coach Mike Votano said the team's hard work is showing in the improvement as the season has progressed.
"We thought we had a chance to pull off a team win by bumping a little bit," Votano said. "We'll just have to rebound. We have to continue to work hard and the results are starting to show with the time we're putting in here has been valuable. As a team, we're all starting to peak at the right time. I believe it's going to carry into districts."
The dual opened at 182 pounds as Robert Koetzle pinned Johnsonburg's Maison Walters in a time of 1:36.
The Rams answered as Dylan DeLong pinned Jacob Gorton in a time of 2:44 in the 195-pound bout.
"At 195, Dylan DeLong won his first match of the year. It's a nice win for him. He's a senior," Votano said. "I knew before too long that he would come away with a win and he did."
Erick Moreno of Sheffield won via forfeit at 220 as did Slater Traister in the 283-pound weight class.
There were no matches at 106 or 113 pounds. Ricky Prosen was a winner by forfeit at 120 pounds and Brandon Johnston won by forfeit at 126 pounds.
Alex Zimmerman earned a dominant 16-1 technical fall in six minutes over Adam Barr. Zimmerman had a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period and continued to pile on the points, leading 6-1 after the second period. Zimmerman took advantage of Barr's four stalling violations against him for free points as Zimmerman moved to 12-2 on the season.
"That was a nice win for Alex. He wrestled this kid this past Saturday and only beat him 9-3," Votano said. "He tech falled him [last night]. He looked a lot better against him."
Caleb Garvey pinned Collin Maines of Sheffield in a time of 2:47 in the 138-pound bout. After a 2-all first period, Garvey was able to hit a reversal and then put Maines on his back for the six team points.
"On Saturday, we saw a matchup that could possibly win [last night's] match. We had Caleb Garvey wrestle against Collin Maines," Votano said. "He looked great, hopefully this continues on for the rest of the season."
Votano weighed both Garvey and Schneider in at 138 pounds as he saw a potential matchup that could earn the Rams a dual win. Schneider was bumped up to 145 pounds to wrestle Doug Grubbs and Grubbs took a 6-1 decision for the Wolverines.
"We bumped Cory Schneider up," Votano said. "This was a spot where we thought we could have an advantage. Cory gave up a little bit of weight, wrestled hard. He'll just have to rebound and come back from this."
Sheffield won by forfeit at 152 and Michael Kennedy did the same for the Rams at 160 pounds.
Mitchell Schloder closed out the dual for Johnsonburg with a pinfall over Jonah Coleman in the 170-pound match. Schloder is coming off a 5-0 showing at the Coudersport Duals last Saturday.
"He had his fifth pin in a row," Votano said. "He had a nice weekend where he went 5-0 and he continued that with another fall. Mitchell's been looking really aggressive and really wrestling tough these past few matches. I believe this is going to continue throughout the rest of the season and into districts."
Johnsonburg hosts Port Allegany next Wednesday with varsity action slated for 7 p.m.
