Otto A. Shippling

Otto A. Shippling, 84, of Woodland Avenue, Johnsonburg, died Saturday, June 18, 2011 at UPMC Hamot Medical Center of Erie after a brief illness.
He was born Aug. 9, 1926 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Adolph and Luise (Granitza) Shippling.
On July 2, 1949, he married Louise (Johnson), who survives.
He lived all his life in Johnsonburg and was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater, American Theater and on board the USS Amsterdam during WWII.
He worked at the Johnsonburg Paper Mill for more than 40 years, retiring in 1989. He was also a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Johnsonburg, and was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler and Pirate fan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, yardwork and gardening.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughers, Krista and her husband Bud Rusalem of Johnsonburg, Beth and her husband Bill Thorwart of Johnsonburg, and Leah and her husband Bill Calla of Riceville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Toby Rusalem, Kira Lechien, Juli McDuff, Rachel Wells, Bill Thorwart, and Abby and Bill Calla; 11 great-grandchildren, Brayden, Jayce, Joey, Tyler, Jenna, Jaeli, Jake, Ethan, Emma-Kae, Bailey, and Cooper; two brothers, Alfred Shippling of St. Marys and Myles Shippling of St. Marys; and by two sisters, Ethel Kanski of Johnsonburg and Edith Freeburg of Massachusetts.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, Heiny and a brother in infancy.
Funeral services for Otto A. Shippling will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday at the St. John Lutheran Church of Johnsonburg with Pastor Stephen Fair officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg/Wilcox Servicemen’s Detail. Military members are asked to assemble at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11:15 a.m.
Burial will take place in McKean Memorial Park.
Visitation is at the Ubel Funeral Home in Johnsonburg on Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. John Lutheran Church.
