Officials weigh option for source water protection plan

December 12, 2011

After the New Year, the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority and the Borough of Ridgway will discuss connecting their water supply systems together to use one source as backup in the event of an emergency.
Ridgway Borough's environmental manager Paul McCurdy attended Tuesday night's Johnsonburg Municipal Authority meeting to discuss the concept.
"I sent you a letter a month or so ago to explore the idea of connecting our systems for mutual support in the event of loss of water supply," McCurdy said. "We are working, as I believe you are, on our source water protection plan and one of the options for a backup water supply is to connect to another municipality."
Johnsonburg Municipal Authority chairman Eric Poague said they have not had a chance to hold a discussion on the issue.
"We were waiting to see what your thoughts were, but this is certainly something we are interested in or at least having some dialogue to have the two authorities sit down together and see what we can come up with," Poague said. "I think it's something that will be beneficial for both municipalities."
Officials discussed which locations would make for the the closest and most logical points to connect their systems.
Poague said the closest location would likely be near the Silver Creek Plant, but running pipeline near Route 219 would also make for a viable option.
McCurdy said the Ridgway Township line ends near Clarion Sintered Metals.
"I think getting water to Ridgway would require some kind of pump station, but to get water to Johnsonburg from Ridgway I think the township pump station could probably supply some water," McCurdy said.
McCurdy noted that if the line ran along Route 219 there would be a greater potential for adding customers and encouraging development in the area.
