Women and Handguns, a popular longtime program offered by Elk County's sheriff's department, will enjoy continued success thanks to a $5,000 grant from the National Rifle Association [NRA].
"Several months ago, I was issuing a license-to-carry permit in the office and I wish now I have the individual's name because he certainly deserves a public thanks," said Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey C. Krieg. "He's a middle school teacher in St. Marys and he's very interested in and involved with the National Rifle Association, of which I am also a member.
"He indicated to me at that time that there was a significant amount of money through the NRA that was being given out in grant form, and that the day after was the final cutoff for applications."
Krieg completed the necessary grant process and was approved for the maximum amount, $5,000.
"It certainly helps because I don't have to subtract from my line items anymore for ammunition, targets-- it's all funded solely by supporters and business people, and sportsmen who are involved in the NRA," Krieg said. "He said in this area, our people fully funded their programs, over $750,000, and they were able to maximize every grant that they issued.
"We're getting target pistols, ammunition and classroom materials, just a fantastic boost to a very popular program that we've been doing for over 20 years."
The Women and Handguns program is a series of NRA-based courses designed to promote safety and reduce firearm-related accidents by helping the women of Elk County become at ease and familiar with handguns.
